Sound Mind & Body w/ Yoga Instructor Erin Ressler

April 2, 2018 by Will Armstrong Filed Under: Health & Wellness, Interviews, Uncategorized

Hello and Welcome to Health and Heels with Dr. Lisa! Continuing on in our Season of Sound, I want to introduce my long time friend, Kundalini, Erin Ressler! Erin is a practitioner and yoga instructor, that recently starting teaching yoga at my Ocean Oasis Spa this March! I’m thrilled to share a little about Erin today and how the practice of yoga contributes to a sound mind and body.Just to give you a brief intro, Erin started getting into the lifestyle, teaching and training of yoga about 20 years ago and over the last 7 – 8 years, she really discovered she wanted to teach and be of service with the practice. She was fortunate to be raised around Kundalini Yoga and meditation, as her dad is a teacher and practitioner so it was always around her and her environment – so she has a lot of valuable experience with yoga and she is so excited to share it with everyone!

Erin practices all kinds of yoga, but the yoga she will be teaching at the Ocean Oasis Spa is Vinyasa Flow, which is Hatha and Ashtanga yoga. She describes Vinyasa basically as giving you a flow between sequences. Erin prefers to go a little slower when teaching her classes, that way there is more structure for the postures and you receive more benefits moving into all of them. Also it will allow you an opportunity so you can feel more freedom to move between the postures – which is the flow. For Erin, yoga makes her feel like she has a place in the world, a purpose for herself and other people, and most importantly being able to give to others – which is such an amazing feeling. I can also really relate to that, because I find when practicing medicine, when I give to people and see their joy, it ten folds back to me. So when we watch people, we can see them go to another place, which is extremely rewarding!I find that yoga helps everything work together and it’s really great when you get that feeling of freedom, relaxation and for some people, it might even be another level of consciousness. Also I have found that ultimately yoga really helps us want to become better people, which is something we all should be striving to do! Yoga not only helps us look good, but it helps us feel good as well, so I think it’s important to try to keep finding that balance. And sometimes one serves the other, so when we look good we feel good too!

Erin also shared with me how yoga helps her find sustainable joy. When she is able to come to a place in herself through diversity and all the things that are happening in life – she looks to find some sort of sustainability and happiness through it with yoga. And even in the worst situations she thinks, you can really start to transmit that!

As a doctor, I have always known about the health benefits of yoga, but I really love to hear that a sound mind also helps with a sound body. This season, I have been trying to get my patients to grasp a sound mind and yoga has been really valuable for that!Erin explains how ultimately the yoga postures are just to get you to a place where you can mediate, Savasana and to relax and move about your day. She teaches her students how it’s a really just a timeout so being able to have good alignment through the postures so your not getting any tweaks in your neck is really essential. And proper alignment and form throughout the postures can actually be a moving meditation as well. (more productive..)Most people when they think of yoga believe you have to be super flexible like many of the crazy yoga poses you see on Instagram, but Erin reassured me that is absolutely not the case. She thinks yoga is actually in the mind and not just the body. Basically, if you can see it in your mind, you can do whatever you want and everything is possible!

I feel like this year, with the yoga studio in my attic, I finally have the missing piece of my practice! Since the Ocean Oasis Spa is three stories, my practice being at the bottom, then the spa and finally the yoga studio at the top in my attic – we are really able to symbolize not only physically, but trying to encourage figuratively the importance of the body, mind and soul at the Ocean Oasis Spa. As a result, promoting peace, relaxation and just being able to get in touch with yourself – which is incredible!I am so excited to share this ancient and beautiful practice with everyone! Keep tuning in on our journey together and I hope we can encourage our followers to get out and try some yoga if you haven’t already. If you would like to keep up with Erin you can follow her on Instagram @jellylove. That’s all for now and as always I’m Dr. Lisa reminding you to be well and be fabulous!

Mobile Mom Squad! – Visits The Elizabeth House

September 1, 2017 by Will Armstrong Filed Under: Baby & Kids, Health & Wellness, In the News, Interviews

This special edition of Health in Heels with Dr. Lisa takes on the road with Dr. Lisa’s Mobile Mom Squad to help moms in need!

This is Dr. Lisa’s first outing with the Mom Squad delivering support, education and much needed  prenatal supplements provided by Duchesnay USA
Pasadena,

Pregnancy Health Aide (PHA), an online resource center dedicated to providing prenatal care, education and tools to underprivileged expectant mothers, today announced the launch of the Mobile Mom Squad, a vehicle that provides health service delivery to needy moms-to-be around the world.

As part of the Mobile Moms Squad’s initial voyage, Dr. Lisa Masterson, will be delivering boxes of prenatal supplements to Pasadena County’s (California) Elizabeth House, a residential shelter committed to ending the cycle of homelessness and abuse among women and children. The launch event will take place from 11am-1pm PT at Elizabeth House, 760 Santa Barbara Street, Pasadena, CA 91101. The CDC recommends that all women of childbearing age incorporate 0.4 mg of folic acid every day, ideally starting at least one month before getting pregnant, to help prevent major birth defects. Being that 50% of pregnancies are unplanned and that many Elizabeth House residents do not have access to prenatal care, Duchesny USA, the makers of Mteryti® and Mteryti® folic 5, has donated 10,000 boxes of its uniquely formulated prenatal supplements.

“Mobile health vehicles are not a new concept, but our approach is new and different because we are helping a portion of the 20 percent of women nationwide who don’t have access to prenatal care,” said Dr. Lisa Masterson. “With the help of Duchesnay USA, we have been able to provide some of these women with Mteryti® and Mteryti® folic 5; two supplements that contain folic acid, an important supplement that can help prevent birth defects.” For more information, please visit www.pregnancyhealthaide.com

October 21, 2016 by Will Armstrong Filed Under: Interviews, Uncategorized

Hope you like chocolate, because that ‘s what we are talking about with Dr. Lisa Masterson’s guest Garrett Anderson from Spruce0132 and Whaddyaluv Chocolate.

screen-shot-2016-10-21-at-12-10-12-pm

Whaddyaluv: Spruce0132’s experiential artisan chocolate brand set for US entry.

Family start up Spruce0132 is to introduce a chocolate brand to boutique channels across the US made entirely fromEcuadorian Sacha Gold Cocoa.

The company was created by Garrett Anderson, brother-in-law of George Loquvam, founder of Coco clone variety SachaGold.

The high-end Whaddyaluv brand uses Coco from Loquvam’s Cimarron Coco Estates and is enclosed in hand folded packaging.

Spruce0132 began as a pop up Christmas store in California called Blitzen’s, but is now concentrated on chocolate and will today (September 22) open it’s own chocolate store in Los Angeles.

It has also opened discussions with retailers to stock though what do you love brand across the US.

‘Not a lot of people are going to beans too’

“Everybody is doing been to bar, but not a whole lot of people are growing the beans too,” said Anderson

The company will also produce a private label product for one retailer but Anderson said, “our intention is to build our own brand”.

Hand-folded packages and personalized messages

screen-shot-2016-10-21-at-12-09-13-pm

The company’s new store has a large chalkboard allowing visitors to write messages detailing what they love about life.

Anderson said the idea came after he left the chalkboard at Laurel Canyon Love Street Festival and was blown away with the response.

Spruce0132 will supply mini chalkboard displays to third-party retailers to create an experiential in-store feature, allowing customers to write what they love about their lives.

“it’s a different retail experience’” said Anderson. “If you go to Whole Foods or Target there were so many brands out there-I don’t know how people choose.”

“Our brand is a 3 x 3 square and the paper that wraps around the bar is hand-folded,” which differentiates it from other brands on shelf, he claimed.

Sweet Success w/ Garrett Anderson

Join us each episode as we document the process of starting and running a small business using Garrett’s Spruce0132 as a real-time case study so others can learn and become inspired to do the same.

Spruce 132 will start by targeting artisan shops, wine stores and gift shops for the Whaddyaluv brand which retails for $4.95, for a 25 g bar.

Anderson said the company was looking for distribution in “ any similar store that has a bigger story other than plain retail, something that’s talking to the community”.

He added that the company would like to explore larger retail such as Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s in the long term.

“Someone at Target was interested, but we’re not looking at the channel yet, but we will someday as they expand in a natural and ethical direction,” said Anderson

The company has been talking to boutique store supposed to close in the US to family members living in Washington and Portland.

“It’s definitely a family affair and it’s dedicated to where we all are,” said Anderson.

Single estate: packaging communications

The brand is not currently communicate that it is a single say chocolate sourced from the family farm, but Anderson said he hope to introduce this messaging as the brand of olives

He said what do you love would have a nice social story to tell at Cimarron to go Estates trains it’s farmers in good agricultural practices, which is helped and quadruple their income.

I want people at the farm to write a note to be inside the packs about they do to tie it back to the farm, said Anderson.

Himalayan salt bar with Coco nibs

The Whaddyaluv brand is produced in commercial kitchen in LA by Anderson and just one other helper.

The company’s main product is it’s 75% pink Himalayan salt bar with Coco nibs, but it also producing a 75% bar with Cayenne pepper.

Anderson formulated the products and self in the company uses mold created by people at the farm in Ecuador.

A national brand and NPD plans

He was looking to Brand extension such as chocolate bar for the US selection with pop rocks inclusion.

It has also created whole cocoa beans from Cimarron Coco Estates covered in chocolate which are around the size of M&Ms but it is working on perfecting the packaging before commercialization.

Anderson said that by 2020 he hopes what do you love will be a national brand and will set continue selling a story rather than simply telling a chocolate product.

The company hopes to partner with Pachamama Alliance, a charity supporting indigenous people in the Amazon, to donate part of it’s proceeds.
