Riding That TamPony “Rap

September 17, 2019 by Dr. Lisa Masterson Filed Under: Ask Dr. Lisa, Beauty & Fashion, Health & Wellness, In the News, Uncategorized

As women, many of us struggle with our “Time of the Month.” It can be uncomfortable, inconvenient, messy, embarrassing and an all-around pain. But it’s also magical. The female reproductive system is nothing short of a miracle and I encourage my patients to embrace their menstruation proudly.

I wrote this rap to share with all of you. It is my hope that we can remove the “stigma” of our periods and embrace the power of our periods! Hope you enjoy!

Riding That Tampony (Rap)

There’s no shame in it,
It’s only nature’s way
I’m here to tell you girl:
“Woman up, it’s ok”
Your period is a power
You bloomin, like a flower
But when you hide your phone
Cuz you feeling “stay at home-y”
Just know you’re not alone
Cuz we all ridin that TamPony

Granny’s stuck in traffic
It’s Strawberry week today
Mother Nature wrote a rain check
Aunt Flow is here to stay
There’s no taboo, there’s no sin
I’m just Checkin’ in the red roof inn
You know the Brits are landin’ again
Red badge of courage from my monthly friend
Calling it girl flu doesn’t make any sense
More like a time for scheduled maintenance

There’s no shame in it,
It’s only nature’s way
I’m here to tell you girl:
“Woman up, it’s okay”
You’re period is a power
You bloomin, like a flower
But when you hide your phone
Cuz you’re feelin “stay at home-y”
Just know you’re not alone
Cuz we all ridin that TamPony

Call it moon time, crimson tide, let Moses time begin
Say Communists are in the funhouse
Say I’m havin the painter’s in
Don’t say riding a red moose
Cut those hater terms loose
So No “on the rag”, no it’s the curse, no ketchup cooch,
No shark week, no monstration, no jammy clam
Say I’m a woman, that’s what I am

There’s no shame in it,
It’s only nature’s way
I’m here to tell you girl:
“Woman up, it’s okay”
You’re period is a power
You bloomin, like a flower
But when you hide your phone
Cuz you’re feelin “stay at home-y”
Just know you’re not alone
Cuz we all ridin that Tampony

Mobile Mom Squad! – Visits The Elizabeth House

September 1, 2017 by Will Armstrong Filed Under: Baby & Kids, Health & Wellness, In the News, Interviews

This special edition of Health in Heels with Dr. Lisa takes on the road with Dr. Lisa’s Mobile Mom Squad to help moms in need!

This is Dr. Lisa’s first outing with the Mom Squad delivering support, education and much needed  prenatal supplements provided by Duchesnay USA
Pasadena,

Pregnancy Health Aide (PHA), an online resource center dedicated to providing prenatal care, education and tools to underprivileged expectant mothers, today announced the launch of the Mobile Mom Squad, a vehicle that provides health service delivery to needy moms-to-be around the world.

As part of the Mobile Moms Squad’s initial voyage, Dr. Lisa Masterson, will be delivering boxes of prenatal supplements to Pasadena County’s (California) Elizabeth House, a residential shelter committed to ending the cycle of homelessness and abuse among women and children. The launch event will take place from 11am-1pm PT at Elizabeth House, 760 Santa Barbara Street, Pasadena, CA 91101. The CDC recommends that all women of childbearing age incorporate 0.4 mg of folic acid every day, ideally starting at least one month before getting pregnant, to help prevent major birth defects. Being that 50% of pregnancies are unplanned and that many Elizabeth House residents do not have access to prenatal care, Duchesny USA, the makers of Mteryti® and Mteryti® folic 5, has donated 10,000 boxes of its uniquely formulated prenatal supplements.

“Mobile health vehicles are not a new concept, but our approach is new and different because we are helping a portion of the 20 percent of women nationwide who don’t have access to prenatal care,” said Dr. Lisa Masterson. “With the help of Duchesnay USA, we have been able to provide some of these women with Mteryti® and Mteryti® folic 5; two supplements that contain folic acid, an important supplement that can help prevent birth defects.” For more information, please visit www.pregnancyhealthaide.com

Facts about the Zika Virus Every Woman Should Know

February 21, 2017 by Will Armstrong Filed Under: Health & Wellness, In the News

On our latest Health in Heels with Dr. Lisa segment, we discuss what you need to know about Zika.

Last summer, the Zika virus was getting a lot over media coverage, which has all but stopped. But that doesn’t mean the virus has gone away, and women aren’t still at risk. In fact, Brownsville, TX was added to the Zika travel guidance as a place to avoid in late October.

https://youtu.be/B4cH3g3tJ1k

So here is what you need to know about Zika:

  • The virus is spread by mosquito bites. It enters the bloodstream of the infected person and can be transmitted through sex even if the infected person does not have symptoms.
  • The virus can be transmitted from mother to fetus and can cause birth defects.
  • If you are pregnant do not travel to areas with Zika. Includes Brownsville, TX and south Florida and many areas in the Caribbean, Central, and South America.

If you do travel to a country that has a Zika travel alert, be sure to take these precautions:

  • Prevent mosquito bites by using an EPA approved insect repellent. EPA-registered insect repellents are proven safe and effective, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • Keep mosquitoes outside by staying in places with air conditioning and with window/door screens.
  • Protect yourself during sex. Women- consider using condoms or not having sex for at least 8 weeks after travel (if you don’t have symptoms) or for at least 8 weeks from the start of symptoms (or Zika diagnosis) if you develop Zika.
  • Avoid areas where there is standing water because they attract mosquitoes.

We’ll post links to the CDC’s travel and prevention guidance below.https://www.cdc.gov/zika/.

Hope this information was helpful, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to submit them in the comments below or on my Twitter or Facebook page.

Dr. Lisa Weighs in on CDC’s New SIDS Report

October 27, 2016 by Will Armstrong Filed Under: Baby & Kids, Health & Wellness, In the News

Recently, Dr. Lisa Masterson appeared on CNN International to address a recent study regarding SIDS and infants and parents sharing a room for the first 6 months.

screen-shot-2016-10-27-at-12-58-39-pm

There are an estimated 3,500 deaths from SIDS and other sleep-related deaths in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Forty-four percent of these are caused by sudden infant death, with 25% accidental strangulation or suffocation and the rest unknown.

SIDS is defined as deaths that occur during a baby’s first year of life, but they most commonly occur between the age of one month to four months, and 90% of SIDS cases happen before a baby is 6 months old — hence the timings for the ruling.
Sudden infant death syndrome is a parents worst fear, Says Dr. Lisa Masterson.  The bedding a baby uses will be different than the bedding used by adults so a separate bed is key.  It is also important to keep the baby on their back at a slight incline.
For at least the first six months of their lives, infants should be sleeping in the same room as their parents, but not the same bed, according to a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Lisa also added, ” There is no exact ideology as to why this happens but keeping the baby in the same room, in a separate bed and on their back at a slight angle free from pillows, soft blankets and stuffed animals will greatly decrease the risk of SIDS.”

The academy recommends children sleep on separate surfaces within the same room, such as a crib, but never on a soft surface, armchair or couch. Optimally, infants should sleep in the same room as parents up to age 1, the organization said.  The aim is to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, known as SIDS, and other forms of infant death that can occur when a baby is sleeping, such as suffocation. These types of death among infants are collectively known as sleep-related infant deaths, or sudden unexpected infant deaths.

Dr. Lisa speaks to Inside Edition about the Zika Virus

Inside Edition

The Today show’s Savannah Guthrie is pregnant with her second child but with the happy announcement came a difficult decision: She will not fly to Rio for this summer’s Olympic games over Zika virus concerns.

Read: Baby Born With Zika-Related Birth Defects in New Jersey Hospital

The mosquito-born Zika virus has been blamed for microcephaly, which causes babies to be born with an abnormally small head, plus other severe birth defects.

Guthrie was scheduled to report the opening ceremonies with Matt Lauer. Many say she is making the right decision to stay home.

Dr. Lisa Masterson of The Doctors told Inside Edition: “If I was Savannah, I would make the same decision. It is extremely wise to take yourself out of harm’s way.”

Many athletes are also not risking their health for the Rio games.

High profile American cyclist Tejay van Garderen announced that he won’t go the Olympics because his wife is pregnant.

Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry also pulled out of the games, citing “several factors including recent ankle and knee injuries.” He did not, however, mention Zika.

Basketball great LeBron James is undecided, reportedly due to Zika concerns.

U.S. soccer star Hope Solo says she’ll begrudgingly go but has fears.

“I am very worried about my health,” she said. “No athlete should be put in this position to decide between your Olympic dreams and your health.”

Dr. Masterson said: “The athletes that are going to Rio should take precautions that the CDC has outlined and that is bringing mosquito repellant, wear protective clothing and make sure they sleep in air conditioned areas — that is very important.”
