DOs and DON’TS of Eyelash extension

March 21, 2017 by Will Armstrong Filed Under: Ask Dr. Lisa, Beauty & Fashion, Health & Wellness

Hello and welcome to Health in Heels with Dr. Lisa!

We are all looking for a fuller, and natural looking lash. If you find mascara and falsies to look too heavy and fake, and good lash extension may be exactly what you are looking for.

As opposed to falsies (which glue a prepared lash on top of your current lashes), lash extensions volumize your lashes by applying single lashes in between your lashes for a fuller, more natural look. Here are some things when considering lash extensions.

1: Research your technician. Make sure they are licensed and they have examples of work to show you. Remember this person is applying glue very close to your eyeball, so you want to be very sure they have the proper training. You’ll want them to do a “patch test” to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction to the lash glue.

2: Lashes Extensions come in all different thicknesses, lengths, and degree of curl. Make sure your lash technician does a thorough consultation before getting started to make sure you are getting the lashes you want. You don’t want to go in wanting a little extra volume and leave with dramatic super dense lashes, or vice versa. Once you’re ready to begin, expect to be in the chair for about two hours.

3: Lash Extension aftercare is SUPER important. Groom your lashes daily with a clean spoolie. Your lashes exist to catch dirt and debris, so it’s important to wash them daily. Gently rub diluted baby shampoo over your lashes once a day.

4: Ditch the waterproof mascara (or any oil based product for that matter). Waterproof eye make-up contains oils that destroy the lash glue and will result in your lashes falling out prematurely. Check the ingredients of your makeup and removers before applying them near your lash extensions.

5: Your lash extensions should lash as long as your natural lash cycle (about six to eight weeks). Make sure your lashes make it by treating them gently. Don’t rub your eyes with a towel or sleep face down on a pillow.

Follow these tips and you’re sure to have the perfect lashes you will love.

The Right Brazilian: Waxing Tips

March 8, 2017 by Will Armstrong Filed Under: Ask Dr. Lisa, Beauty & Fashion, Health & Wellness

Welcome to Health in Heels with Dr. Lisa,

Spring Break is coming up in April, and that means bathing suit season is right around the corner. If you want the smoothest bikini area, you can’t beat a Brazilian wax. Especially if you are a first-timer, Brazilians can be a little scary, but they don’t have to be.

Here are a few tips before you get your wax on:

  1. You want the hair to be at least a quarter-inch long, which means not shaving for two to four weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows.
  2. It’s going to hurt, especially if it’s your first time. Why? The bulb of a first-timer’s hair is larger than the pore it’s being pulled from. Regular waxes make the hair finer and the bulb smaller. But even if you are a regular, it’s still going to hurt. You can use an OTC Lidocaine spray [recommendation] 10 minutes before your wax to help with the pain.
  3. You can also take an anti-inflammatoires like Ibuprofen.
  4. If you are on your period, you can still get a Brazilian, but alert your waxing technician in advance and wear a tampon. Most technicians are OK with working around the string, but it may hurt more since your skin is more sensitive during your period.
  5. After the wax use a soothing serum with aloe vera or tea tree lotion to prevent ingrown hairs.
  6. And exfoliating between waxing helps.
  7. You should only get a Brazilian wax if you have healthy skin. Do not go to the the salon if you have a sunburn, or you have a skin condition like psoriasis or sores.

Something to think about:
If you are on accutane [other medications]- the Rx leaves skin thinner and susceptible to tearing.

Also, do not go tanning right after a Brazilian wax. The waxing removes a layer of skin vital to UV Ray Protection.

A Healthy Way to Detox

March 1, 2017 by Will Armstrong Filed Under: Food & Drink, Health & Wellness

Hello and welcome to Health in Heels with Dr. Lisa!

Are you ready to detox after some winter indulgences? We are coming off the holiday season where many of us indulged a little too much. Halloween Candy, Thanksgiving Pie, Egg-Nog, New Year Champagne, and of course those little heart-shaped chocolates.

When people hear “detox” they think of extremely restrictive diets accompanied by irregular and frequent bowel movements. But “detoxing” doesn’t’ have to be torture. In fact, when you eat the right foods, in the right balance, your body naturally rids itself of excess waste and unwanted compounds. And that is the theory behind Clean Eating Detox.

By eating unprocessed whole foods, a Clean Eating detox can help you overcome cravings for sugar and other processed foods, restore your gut health, and remove toxins and extra body fat.

Unlike extremely restrictive diets like juice cleanses (which all but abolishes protein), you can actually sustain a Clean Eating Detox over a longer period of time, just follow these three simple tips:

  1. Get enough lean protein, and distribute it throughout the day. Women need at least 50-60 grams of protien a day (more for active women). So make sure you are consuming 20-30 grams of lean protein every 4-6 hours. That’s a 4 oz salmon filet, a half-cup of diced chicken breast, or a half-cup of black beans.
  2. Switch your carb sources. Try to get most of your carbohydrates from vegetables and whole grains instead of sugars and flour. Make sure you are getting no fewer than 120 grams of carbs per day.
  3. Keep calories down and spread throughout the day. A low-calorie diet for women should be between 1500 and 1800 calories with 350 at breakfast, 450 at lunch, 550 at dinner and two 150 calories snacks in between.
  4. In order to make a lower calorie diet enjoyable, avoid added sugars and saturated fats that suck of calories without leaving you feel full.
  5. It’s also a good idea to take some form of nutrient supplement while you are calorie restricting.

I’ll post links to some of my favorite clean eating recipes below.
