Shannon from Illinois has a birth control implant issue for Dr. Lisa:
Hi Dr. Lisa. I’m 32 yrs old and my period is usually very heavy and painful. I’m 10 days late, I’ve been feeling nauseated, emotional, gassy, and lot of symptoms as if I was pregnant. I took a home pregnancy test and it came out negative. I also have the arm implant birth control but it is expired. Would the hormones from the implant be giving false negative results? What should I do? hope to hear from you soon.

The progestin-only hormone implant:
The progestin-only hormone implant releases hormones that prevent pregnancy for 3 years. It must be inserted and removed by a trained health professional. The actual implant is about the size of a matchstick and is inserted under the skin on the inside of the upper arm.
