Dr. Lisa Masterson takes a moment to explain the magic of conception.
As a practicing OBGYN, Dr. Lisa often has to explain the the Birds and the Bees to her patients and her Santa Monica clinic. To keep things from getting too complicated and confusing, Dr. Lisa will often break out her Giant Microbes. Giant Microbes are plush replicas of organisims that are too small to be viewed by the human eye. They are also super cute and make talking about complex scientific processes much easier and relatable to her patients who might be overwhelmed.
Take a look at Dr. Lisa video here:
Something magical is about to happen! Watch as the ovulation process occurs, and then millions of sperm swim upstream on a quest to fertilize an egg.
Egg: The egg cell, or ovum, is the female reproductive cell (gamete) in oogamous organisms. The egg cell is typically not capable of active movement, and it is much larger (visible to the naked eye) than the motile sperm cells.
Sperm: the mature motile male sex cell of an animal, by which the ovum is fertilized, typically having a compact head and one or more long flagella for swimming.
Stem Cell: an undifferentiated cell of a multicellular organism that is capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of the same type, and from which certain other kinds of cell arise by differentiation.
ZYGOTE: a diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes; a fertilized ovum.
